ABOUT... EQUINE DENTISTRY

Why should you call an equine dentist?

It is because of the domestication that our equides need an annual dental care for the beginning of their life.

In fact, equides are monogastric herbivores with a continious dental growth, about 1 to 3 mm per year, and that for all their life.

This phenomenon is compensated by the wear induced during chewing of strong vegetal fibers and others debris.

But our domesticated equides, do not graze enough as it should be (between 16 to 18hours a day) and the food we give to them is not enough abrasive.

This lack of wearCe manque d’usure des dents forme des pics d’émail, appelés surdents, très saillants, pouvant blesser les joues et la langue.

The horse dentist correct this lack of wear to improve chewing, to give a real confort every day and to allow better sport perormances.

Others pathologies are also cured during the intervention as the extraction of baby teeth on young horses, descaling, overgrowth theeth correction and jaw deformations supervision (parrot mouth, wry nose, monkey mouth), wolf teeth, and extraction of moving teeth on old horses...

GOOD TO KNOW...

Horse teeth are growing until 6 years to reach 7 to 7,5cm, we call it dental capital. So the horse will have only these few centimeters for all his life.

This is why the horse dentist has to be as conservative as possible remembering that the horse mouth has to be free of physiological contraints during chewing and free of discomfort.
